How to Save Money on Your Electric and Heating Bill

Households are on the lookout for ways to save money. They may use coupons or wait for sales in order to purchase items that they need. One thing that they start saving money on is on their electric and heating bill.

Purchase blinds for your home. Blinds can be purchased at a retail store for as little as $5 or you can look for some heavy-duty blinds. The cheaper ones may not last long, but you will reap the benefits while you have them.

To save money on your electric bill, you can turn off the lights during the daytime to allow the sun to shine in. This will only work in a room that has more than one window in it. Make sure the curtains are open as well. Just opening the blinds will not allow the sun to shine through. Also, this will not work, unless you are in a room that is facing the sun. You may be still be able to get some light from a room that the sun does not shine in, but you will not be warm.

While saving on your electric bill, you may be able to save on your heating bill at the same time. While the sun is shining through the blinds, turn down the heat. When the sun is out, sit in the room that the sun shines in and open up the blinds and curtains. Put on an extra layer of clothing as well. If you work from home, place your desk in front of the window that the sun shines through, so that the warm sun can shine on you.

At night, you can close the blinds and put a blanket over the curtains to shut out any light or cool night air. Put extra blankets on your bed and wear comfortable night clothing. Make sure the heat is turned down as well. If you have children and they need to have a nightlight on to go to sleep, instead of using a nightlight, consider opening up the blinds to allow the streetlights to shine in, if you live on a city street.
