The Big Move

Moving between homes is one of the most stressful times of your life and it pays to be organised to minimise damage to your belongings and furniture and to keep your move as stress free as possible. I know that it sounds far easier than it actually is, as trying to be organised is one thing but keeping your cool in the heat of the moment is another, but a few measures can make your life a little easier.

Firstly, see if you can get some sturdy boxes from your house removal company Birmingham and try to pack a few things ahead of time to take the panic out of things nearer the big move.

Only put in those things that you are not going to need or you could actually make it worse as you will have to start unpacking them even before you move. (more...)

Buy Small

We have all been there – picture the scene, you are on holiday in Africa or the Middle East and you come across a gorgeous carved statue or small wooden table and before you know it you have parted with your cash. It is only when you get back to the hotel that you realise how big it is compared to your suitcase and you face having to hire UK international removals to Switzerland just to get it back home.

Over the years I have had to buy extra suitcases to bring back carpets from Kuwait and Morocco, huge gilt mirrors from Pakistan and footstools from Dubai, and I cringe to think how much I have spent on excess baggage over this time.

I am now a little wiser when it comes to choosing my purchases abroad although I still love to bring trinkets back. (more...)

Little Touches

While many of us will never be lucky enough to own property in Costa del Sol, there are little touches that we can make around our home to give it more of a holiday atmosphere, reminiscent of long and lazy holidays instead of the rain that we are more used to.

Small decorations around the house can make a world of difference. If you have a patio or decking, why not consider putting out small lights, Moroccan lanterns and coloured scatter cushions to give it a really unique and exotic look?

It is relatively easy and not very expensive to buy things in a different style such as Moroccan, Spanish or French accessories for the home, and a few carefully placed trinkets can really brighten up your home. (more...)

A Comfortable Home Office

More of us are choosing to work from home every year and whereas it used to be relatively rare to work from home, it is now quite common. If you are thinking about working from home, the most important thing – apart from a job! – will be your home office as this can make or break how successful it is.

The most important thing is that you should try if you can to have a separate room in the house which can be called your office, to separate work and home life. If you are trying to work at the dining table it can be distracting and you feel like you are working all the time.

Buy a good desk, which does not need to be expensive, and Office Chairs that you can sit at for extended periods without your back hurting. Comfort is everything – after all you would not expect to have to work on a kitchen chair and a coffee table in an office would you? (more...)

Always Something to Celebrate

Apart from the main present giving times of Birthdays and Christmas, there are other times during the year when it is thoughtful to give gifts to family and friends and it is often difficult to know what to buy for them. Luckily there are some online companies which offer special types of presents designed specifically for a special occasion, which makes our lives far easier.

Gifts such as special trinkets for Mothers Day, with a special dedication to Mother, or New Home Christmas Ornaments are the sort of things I am talking about. Christmas baubles with 'Baby’s First Christmas' or a teddy bear with 'Be My Valentine' written on.

Some may say that these are merely decorative rather than useful but they are missing the point as this sort of gift can be treasured for years to come and I still have all the 'Best Mum' teddies from all those years ago. (more...)

French Home Things

Although our French neighbours are a short hop across the channel, it has often been difficult and quite expensive to buy good French things here – you know the sort of thing I mean, the things that we love when we are on holiday in France and miss so much when we get back.

However, there are now some excellent online shopping sites where you can buy French food and French decor to remind you of those balmy nights spent on the balcony, drinking French wine and eating delicious French food.

For the home, it is now simple to add a little of that French chic and flair, gorgeous trinkets and household items which would not look out of place in a home in Provence. However simple a decoration or gadget is, the French always seem to design it with a flair that makes it into a piece of art. (more...)

Find a good mortgage broker, and even before you have found the ideal home for you and your family, get yourself approved for the amount of money you've allowed yourself to spend. This way, you will avoid the unfortunate situation in which you find a home that you love but miss out on it because you cannot prove you have the means to pay for it. (more...)

Modern Home Security

Today, more and more people are paying increasing attention to the security of their homes. In urban areas especially, where crime rates are on the rise, alarm systems, barred windows and a High Security Fence are the trappings of an ordinary house.

There are a number of basic security systems from which to choose if you are a concerned homeowner. The simplest and most popular of these is undoubtedly the straightforward burglar alarm.

This kind of siren system is hooked up to the entry points, including all doors and windows, of your house, and once set, it will be triggered by any motion in these areas. While some alarm systems begin and end with the siren, the more effective among them are linked with a private response company. (more...)

Do the Sums!

Whatever type of mortgage you take out, whether it is a short term loan or a lifetime mortgage scheme you will need to make sure that you do your sums accordingly, especially if you are on a variable rate. You will, of course, have calculated how much you need to put aside every month to pay the mortgage and there is often little left over at the end of each month.

That is why, if you have home improvement work to do on your property, it can often be left on the backburner until things are not so tight and years can pass before you actually get around to doing anything for your home.

But it need not be that way. If you can set yourself small goals and targets along the way, you can do your home improvements slowly but surely, especially if you can do a lot of the work yourself. (more...)

Designing the Atmosphere of your Show House

Preparing for a show house is a rigorous and stressful business. Once your estate agent has taken preliminary steps towards the sale of your house, such as posting the property online at eurobrix or a similar site, the time to prepare for potential buyers will soon follow.

To begin with it is vital that you manage to strike the correct balance between a home that is sparklingly clean and yet one that also remains warm, inviting and lived in. You don't want guests distracted by clutter and dirt, but you also don't want them uncomfortable in the sterile environment.

The best way to achieve this effect is to clean thoroughly, and then add a few careful touches afterwards. This will allow you to design the atmosphere so that it is both aesthetically pleasing and relaxed and inviting. (more...)

The Eye of the Beholder

In the home or office, art makes a difference. It can define a space, and turn a wall into a remarkable window of amazing colour, shapes, designs, or charcoal representations. Canvas art easily makes a blank wall of your house or home interesting or redefines a busy area into a more tranquil spot. Art on canvas has an appeal that immediately pulls the eye and engages interest.

In the home or office, the most important aspect of art is what will be appreciated, and what will flow with the rhythm of the room in which it will be placed. Art becomes not only a part of the place it occupies, but makes the area complete.

It is possible to have control on the artwork you value as a part of the space you work or live in, by selecting an image or drawing and having it placed on canvas. Some art stores can take your selected design and place that exact drawing, painting, or photo on canvas for you. (more...)

Small Scale Renovations increase House Values

If you are selling your home in the city, you'll want to get as good a price for it as possible. While London property is something of a safe bet in real estate sales, you may still need to tweak your house into shape here and there.

More often than not, a little work is necessary in order to get a home into peak condition. A few simple renovations before a sale can dramatically affect the valuation of your property and it's often a good idea to go through the home with your estate agent in order to determine which areas would most benefit from a face-lift.

While the odd adjustment here and there is helpful, it is not necessary to spend too much money on the house you are selling. If it needs a total overhaul in order to boost the value, then it's not worth it. (more...)

Out of the Sun

Sunny days should be enjoyed, not squinted at with a pained expression. Unfortunately, just as you walk out onto your porch or as customers start up the steps to your shop this is exactly what happens. On rainy days, you might still wish for a breath of fresh air outdoors, but sitting in a downpour certainly isn’t healthy.

A good way to enjoy the outdoors, or invite customers inside your business is with awnings. Awning designs are not all the same. From flashy to sedate you can sit or stand outside comfortably no matter the weather.

Whether for home or commercial use an awning is both an attractive and practical solution for weather of all kinds. Awnings can serve many purposes. (more...)

Redecorate on a Budget

Giving your home a facelift can be a very expensive enterprise and in the current economic climate, few of us can afford it. It is possible, however, to redecorate on a budget as long as you follow a few simple guidelines.

To begin with, it is important that you select certain areas of your home to focus on. Pick a few important features that need changing or replacing. Most of the money will go in this direction; however, you also need to make sure there is cash left over to perk up the rest of the space.

Once you have identified furnishings and drapery that need to be replaced, shop around to find the best bargains you can. Browse the internet and pay special attention to budget furniture stores and sales at specialist shops like Carols Curtains (more...)

Outsourcing Your Life

It seems that nowadays, despite all the supposedly labour saving devises that are designed to help us, we now have less free time than normal. Trying to balance work, home, a social life and more is quite a tricky deal!

There are some ways that thinking outside of the box can help. One way, is to work out how much you think that your time is worth. If you believe that each hour is worth twenty pounds to you, for example, then why do something yourself when you can pay someone to do it for you?

This particularly applies to jobs around the home, where perhaps hiring someone else to do a job may be more beneficial than you doing it yourself. There are services offering domestic cleaning Taunton, lawn mowing, dog walking, car washing and many more besides. (more...)

Hiring a Designer

Whether you live in a villa or an apartment on the seventh floor, having your home professionally decorated is inevitably an expensive and time-consuming job. If you have decided to shell out and hire a designer, therefore, it's important that you pick the right person.

Finding a designer can be a difficult task, especially if you are new to the business of home renovation. To begin with, it's a good idea to talk to your friends and family. Ask the people close to you for their recommendations; the chances are good that one of them will have a connection that might suit your character.

If this is not a successful strategy, turn to the internet. Search reputable designers in your city and take care to read any available online reviews – whether these are written by colleagues or clients they will undoubtedly tell you something useful about the person and his or her work. Chemicals at Home

If you are keen to renovate your house or apartment, but you are running a little on the necessary funds, you are probably under the impression that you are sentenced to live in shabby conditions until your bank balance looks significantly healthier.

However, this is not necessarily the case. While you absolutely should not undertake a full-scale renovation on if you cannot pay for it, you can conduct superficial renovations that will stave off discomfort until the time is right for a real refurbishment.

This kind of project is conducted in the details. Instead of knocking through walls, investigating methoxetamine and building on extensions, you will simply need to give your living space a facelift. This involves repainting, for example, and replacing worn fittings and fixtures. (more...)

Washing Machines

Some of the most important decisions in everyone’s life relate to purchases for the house. There are many big products that stay with us for quite a while such as fridges, freezers, tumble dryers and washing machines . But if you are a novice buyer or buying these products for the first time it can be a daunting task, with so many different models on the market how do you pick out the right one for you and what is the difference between them all?

While picking out washing machines may seem daunting in reality it is quite a straight forward process. The first thing to think about is the size of washing machine you need, this depends upon how big your household is. Typically for a single person or a couple the size of washing machine required is 5kg. This relates to the size of the drum and how much laundry it can hold. Obviously for a larger family a bigger sized washing machine would be needed.

The next question to ask yourself when looking at washing machines is whether you choose top loading or front loading washing machines. This has no affect upon the performance of any washing machine but depends entirely upon how much space you have for the washing machine; front loading washing machines are typically 40 to 45 cm wide and 60cm deep. The advantage top loader washing machines have over front loader machines are is the fact you don’t need to bend down to load and unload them, this makes them a perfect choice for those who have difficulties bending down. In need of a good night sleep?

Have you ever heard the expression, “As strong as an oak?” Often, it is used to refer to an individual who is unusually strong. But the reason the expression is still used today is because the oak has long been a symbol of strength and elegance.

This makes oak not only one of the most aesthetically pleasing woods to use in the home, but also one of the most durable. That is why people have been using oak trees to make furniture and beds for centuries now. Good beds for sale uk can be found if you look online.

The early carpenters and craftsmen knew what they were doing and they knew that certain pieces of furniture, like beds and chairs had to be durable and strong to last, which is why they selected oak as the wood they liked to work with the most. (more...)

Is Home Contents Insurance Really Important?

Many people fail to see the importance of Contents Insurance for their home. The rationale is that in case of accident or damage, they can afford to replace everything, but are not prepared to pay premiums each month in case such an eventuality occurs.

The point is, we don't realise the enormity of losing all our belongings and when faced with such a reality, we seldom have the capacity to deal with it. We don't always realise the value of our belongings.

We keep thinking that our possessions are not really that valuable in terms of money, but things keep piling up, and before we know it, we have acquired possessions that add up to a big amount. In this light, thinking that home insurance is not worth it, is like voluntarily closing your eyes with shutters. (more...)

Revamp Your House within Your Budget

It seems that home care and maintenance has a bad reputation. That whenever someone says 'renovation' in front of other people, there will always be one or two people who will then embark on a detailed description of all the things that went wrong with their renovation.

From the terrible contractors, to the tiles that aren't the right the colour – you will hear every detail. Don't let this put you off. While home maintenance can be a bit of a drag and can certainly be time consuming, your home is more than just a building, it is also an investment. An investment you need to take care of.

This doesn't mean, however, spending huge sums of money. It is possible, if you are smart about it, to revamp your home within the budget. For starters there are good, yet cheap bathroom suites that will make you feel like you have a whole new bathroom at very little cost. (more...)

How to Save Money on Your Electric and Heating Bill

Households are on the lookout for ways to save money. They may use coupons or wait for sales in order to purchase items that they need. One thing that they start saving money on is on their electric and heating bill.

Make sure the curtains are open as well. Just opening the blinds will not allow the sun to shine through. Also, this will not work, unless you are in a room that is facing the sun. You may be still be able to get some light from a room that the sun does not shine in, but you will not be warm. (more...)

Many of us must live in the city for work, school or to be near family. Meanwhile, we dream of a simpler life in the country. While our dream may not take fruition until retirement, we can make small changes to our urban homes, making them feel like a country cottage.

City homes are typically smaller and cramped. Your home may have a small yard or be uncomfortably close to your neighbors. Adding simple accents such as wooden venetian blinds can change the look and feel of your urban home.

Picture the homes that you see in old movies. They do not have flashy colors or edgy light fixtures. To get that cottage look, choose real wood furniture, with a natural stain. Shop antique or second hand stores for rustic-looking tables and chairs. You can easily refinish tables and reupholster chairs to give them a new life. (more...)
